Dexteria - Fine Motor Skills App Reviews

Unpolished

I bought this app for two reasons- I like the idea of a game where a child can work on fine motor on the go, and it says it can be used in French for my francophone clients. The games are cute, but the writing is hard to do without bringing down the nightshade is OS5. The Language translations are horrible- you must have your phone in French via utilities to use it (why no option to just use the app in French?) and while the menus and directions have been translated- the actual games havent. Ie: when a child writes a number, its spoken in English despite the fact that the phone is set to French. How confusing is that? For a 5$ app I expected much better.

Excellent app until iOS5: crashes non stop.

I really loved this app and used it a lot with my kids for fine motor skills development. Really outstanding. Then iOS5 came out and this app crashes between 20 seconds and 2 minutes uf use, on the finger tapping part. I waited at first, as iOS5 was new, to give time to the Devs to fix it. We are now in February 2012, still no progress: I have to rate it badly because whatever good it has, you canèt use it. Save yourself 5$ until it has been iOS5 fixed...

Ms

I have recently had a stroke and dexterity has been part of my therapy to work at getting my fine motor skills to return

Great app

Easy to use and very motivating. I was surprised how well it works on the iPhone screen. An excellent tool for fine motor practice, and would be great for teaching pre-writing skills.

Really good!

I have a 5 yr old son with autism, and he took to this app really easily! He particularly liked the pinching game. The writing practice was also useful for me to see his ability as he is only now learning to write. The hand coordination game is still too difficult for him, but he is trying to master it. Thanks a lot for these exercises!

Great for fine motor activities.....

I really like the latest release of this app...especially the ability to work on not only lower case letters, but now also upper case letters and numbers. Great app for children with autism and other developmental disabilities. We love to pinch crabs at our house!

luv it

really helping my son coordinate hand control

Favorite app!

I first saw this app on the A4cwsn website and wanted it. Could t get iTunes to work and then today I got it. I love this app!

Completely Regret This Purchase

This app is horrible. Its awkward, boring, and clumsy, and with the new iOS, the Notification Center tab is constantly being activated by my son when accessing the letters, and he has tiny fingers. Spend the $3 on a pencil and paper. Giving 1 star is generous...

Wonderful for fine motor skills!

I definitely think Dexteria is a worthwhile app- it works on 3 skills- pinching, finger placement/coordinated tapping of fingers such as in keyboarding, and handwriting (tracing of upper and lowercase letters, and numbers). It gives good auditory feedback to show when your stroke is incorrect and gives you a chance to fix it. It also takes data! It will tell you how many seconds it took to complete each letter for example, or how many crabs were pinched, and so on. A great app to reinforce needed fine motor skills!

Dexteria

As a resource room teacher, I bought this app knowing it would help my 2nd grade student with Apraxia. I have found that ALL my LD students benefit and extremely ENJOY playing these games before we do any writing. Even my dyslexic students now look forward to writing as long as they can "get their fingers ready to write" first!! Thanks for such a useful app!! My only suggestion would be the option to keep track of more than one students progress. I use this with several students and have to erase, or write down on a piece of paper, where each student ended.

Great app!

i ABSOLUTELY LOVE dexteria! This app has helped my daughter (with apraxia and motor issue)s fine motor so much!! (AND SHE LOVES TO "PLAY" IT!!!!!) THANKS!!!!!!

Awesome

This game is a must have for school based occupational therapists. Love quality educational apps. Thanks! :)

Great

As a school based OT, this APP rox! Engaging, available for iphone use, and measures outcome! Thank u for making it!

Hand calibration

Is anyone else having issues with the hand calibration. It takes upwards of 10 minutes before the program successfully completes its calibration. Looks like a bug to me but I havent seen any other comments about it.

Isnt working the way it should

I was disappointed with the lack of responsiveness of the app. The window shade is still an issue to be fixed - the whole alphabet tracing activity locks up once the window shade is activated. The other activities only work correctly part of the time. I cant use this as it is with my students. What a waste of money.

Needs

I agree with needing cursive letters to trace and a way to track progress of many students. Doing therapy on the iPad has greatly increased motivation for kids so thanks for Dexteria!

not worth the money

Its nothing special. I dont think its worth $5.

Great app!

I love this app. I teach Special Education to very low functioning middle school students. I stumbled onto this app when doing some on line research for teaching ideas to use with my students. I did not have an iPad at the time, so just filed the info away for future use. I finally talked the principal into getting my class an iPad and this was one of the first apps I downloaded. I am very impressed with it. My students like the crab pinching game and the letter tracing game best. They are getting a real work out and I am seeing some improvement. I showed the occupational therapist the app and she was very impressed. She checked out the letter tracing and said it reinforces the correct way of writing the letters. Too many apps with letter tracing do not show students the correct order to form the letters. So that is a good feature. All-in-all, the app is very well done. It is simple to use and very professional. There is one thing to remember, though. Go to settings from the iPad home screen. Turn off the "multitasking gestures" setting when you use this app. It wont work properly otherwise. This app would be great for parents who want to work with a student who is having problems with fine motor skills or handwriting. It is not babyish like some of the apps that cover handwriting, so it is good for any age. I could see this as being good for people who are recovering from stroke or injury that affects fine motor skills. This would also be good in any grade level regular education classroom as individual work for students who are having problems with handwriting and fine motor skills. Often students dont quite make the cutoff for eligibility for special services, such as Occupational Therapy, but still need help. This is a very good use for this app, and could even be used in the documentation process to show that interventions have been tried in the regular ed class, prior to referral for special services. If you are a teacher or therapist using this app, you will like the upgrade that they just put on the app. Now there is an option for multi-student tracking. Get this app. It is one of the best Ive seen and well worth the small cost!

Doesnt work good in Ipad 3
